Junior linebacker Phillip Steward helped atone for a Keenum interception in the end zone, picking off Austin Davis passing yards, four touchdowns and returning it to the USM 4 to set up a Michael Hayes touchdown run to cut the deficit to at the mark of the third quarter.
But the Cougars couldn't stop the Golden Eagles from that point as Southern Miss reeled off 21 unanswered points to take a lead. UH had trouble containing the Golden Eagles' rushing attack yards as the game wore on, including junior Tracey Lampley, who caught six passes for yards and two scores.
After the Cougars turned the ball over on downs with left, trailing by three touchdowns, reality began to set in and some fans started hitting the exits as UH's big dreams evaporated.

Michael Hayes scored on the next play to cut the deficit to , and a Houston rally seemed to be coming. Instead, Lampley started the Golden Eagles' next series with a yard run and Southern Miss took more than four minutes off the clock before Desmond Johnson scored on a yard scamper.
The Cougars' secondary broke down again in the final minute of the third quarter, when Davis found Lampley open down the sideline for a yard touchdown and a Southern Miss lead. It was star quarterback Case Keenum 's last home game for Houston for sure, and could've also been the finale for coach Kevin Sumlin, who's mentioned as a top candidate for virtually every higher-profile job opening.
Many of the things that have been reported have been found out to be false already. Houston athletic director Mack Rhoades will discuss a contract extension soon with Sumlin, who was an offensive assistant under R. Sumlin is in four seasons here. Keenum could've also bolstered his case for an invitation to next week's Heisman Trophy ceremony. Instead, the Golden Eagles turned it into their showcase, shackling Houston's high-powered offense and striking with several big plays of their own to win their first league title and reach 11 victories for the first time.
